Arts Advocacy Day:

The arts and sciences essential to the prosperity of the state and to the ornament and happiness of human life have a primary claim to the encouragement of every lover of his country and mankind.  George Washington

Arts Advocacy Day, held annually at the State House in Augusta, is facilitated by the Maine Alliance for Arts Education, an organization that promotes and encourages education in all the arts for all Maine students. This year, three members of the National Art Honor Society, Mikayla Artkop, Hunter Merchant, and Katy King, were chosen to represent Waldo County. For the last four years, the Belfast Area High School’s National Art Honor Society has played an active role in Arts Advocacy Day by creating Celebrate Arts Education pins for the Maine legislature and sending a handful of students to speak on behalf of arts education. The day is spent listening to speakers and talking with legislators about the importance of arts and arts education. This year we were able to speak with our local representative, Erin Herbig, who gave us a short tour of the building and her office.
