Archaeology Class Site Visit

posted Nov 4, 2013, 5:12 AM by butch.richards@rsu20.org
Some of the students of Mr.
Lagerbom's Archaeology class at BAHS had the opportunity to recently visit a shipwreck site on the Passagassawakeag River in Belfast to conduct a preliminary site survey of the vessel. The project resulted in a detailed, scale drawing of the wreck site complete with rough draft drawings, photos, notes and descriptions. The students also reported on their hypotheses regarding the age/era of the vessel, its type and usage as well as its fate, all based on their understanding of the available evidence. Mr. Lagerbom received his MA in History and Archaeology from the University of Maine. His thesis involved the history and excavation of an American Revolutionary War trading post on the Penobscot River in Veazie. The elective Archaeology class is offered every fall at the high school and this is the fourth such visit to the shipwreck site.
