On January 5, 2018, Belfast Area High School held its fifth annual Postgraduate Forum.  Recent past graduates were invited to attend during the school day to talk to Sophomores and Seniors about what they are doing in college, travel, internships, and gap years.  They offered insights about college and life after high school.  Students noted how they felt prepared for college and what they wished they knew more about before leaving home.  They discussed the joys of choosing what they want to study, the freedom to make their own decisions, and the difficulty and stress of learning how to manage their money.  They talked about life at college and school, roommates, activities, and travel at college that they are able to access.  Some have changed majors and colleges since their first semesters.  They also talked about their career goals after college.

Due to the generosity of the postgraduates and their time, this presentation has grown so that we have enough postgraduates to speak to the tenth grade class as well, about college opportunities. The School Counseling Department hopes this interactive presentation inspires young students to plan ahead earlier in high school for postgraduate opportunities after high school.  Hearing from peers closer to their own age is very meaningful to students.  The forum was sponsored by the school’s MELMAC grant.

The School Counseling Department provided lunch for the post grads immediately following the presentations, and everyone had a nice time socializing and catching up.
